Ideation is the process of generating ideas and solutions through sessions such as Sketching, Prototyping, Brainstorming, Cheatstorming, brain-dumping, Worst Possible Idea, and a wealth of other ideation techniques.
PART 2: How to get those ideas out of your head:
These help you get the ideas flowing BEFORE You commit.
Grab your sketchbook & fav pencil:
OPEN your sketchbook to the first blank page. Open it flat.
Start on the preferred side of your sketchbook. Put the date in the top right corner.
Divide the page into 9 even spaces.
PAUSE: Take 3-5 minutes. Quietly think about the project subject or theme. What is the end goal? What comes to mind? What methods or compositions do you want to try? Just think, take deep breaths, exhale, and let the ideas sit for a few minutes.
DUMP: Take your ideas or the topic and start to dump those ideas on paper. Write, sketch & draw those ideas. They can be quick, sketchy, and rough. They can be the first ideas that come to your head, from Google searches, or discussions. Even if the idea is the same concept but from a different angle.
Get it on paper.
COLLECT: On the left side of your sketchbook, make notes, tape images from Google searches, and glue photos you have taken, you choose whatever inspires you.
OBSERVE your sketches. Make notes on the left side, and think about materials and colors. Ask yourself questions.
Pick (mark with a star) 2 ideas that you want to start to make come to life.
Now to Step 3!

Wait?! Why do I need to draw or write down all of my ideas?
Don’t let them sit and consume our minds! Or smoother us like these cats...
Thanks to the brain's neuroplasticity, it can grow and change over time! Scientific research shows that the more you write out your ideas and thoughts the more room you allow in your brain for new growth, new ideas, and for those ideas to process and grow! Our brains are amazing!
